How to Save Money on Laundry Detergent — 10 Comments

  1. We have been making this since your first blog post 5 years ago. I love it! We substitute Zote soap for the felsnaptha, but still works great! Thank you for all of the money you have saved us! Miss you!

    • I’m so glad it’s worked well for you! I’ve never heard of Zote soap but will have to check it out. Miss you, friend!

    • It works as well- maybe better- than anything else we’ve used. Light grass stains come out. For heavy stains I pretreat with Fels Naphtha.

I have 5 boys and 5 girls, so I understand what you mean with grass stains. :)

  2. so i have used this before and it did not work very well. stains were not coming out and the clothes..especially fleece had an unpleasent odor to them. could it be because i did not take the extra steps to mix it after it gelled?

    • Hi Nicole, we have used this same recipe and had the same issues, especially with synthetic fabrics. It may be your water type. We have hard water with a softener in place. I would purchase our regular arm and hammer detergent and use half that and half homemade which at least would stretch the homemade. :)
